Sometimes we don't like the results we get.
Maybe the conversation with a co-worker didn't go as we wanted.
Perhaps we are feeling some resentment in a relationship.
Maybe we didn't achieve a personal goal.
When you don't like your results, it's time to check out the BEAR.
Here's what I mean by that:
Beliefs influence emotions.
Emotions influence actions.
Actions influence results.
Results are sometimes good. Other times not so good.
Beliefs, Emotions, Actions, and Results = BEAR.
When we examine our results, we can make improvements. To do that, we examine the BEAR in reverse. Like this:
Start with the result you got.
What actions led to that result?
What emotions influenced those actions?
What beliefs influenced those emotions?
Here's what that could look like when you are unpacking a work conversation that leaves you resentful.
Result = I felt resentment.
Action = I stayed quiet when a co-worker said something about me that I thought was unfair.
Emotion = I was afraid to speak up.
Belief = My words aren't valued here.
Notice that you can make changes at any point on the BEAR. However, you need to address the core beliefs that impact you to get to the root of your results. When you do that, it can look something like this:
Belief = My words are needed here.
Emotion = I feel like I need to speak up.
Action = I speak up when a co-worker says something about me that's unfair.
Result = I address the issue.
My coaching clients often experience transformation when they realize how their current beliefs impact them. For example, consider how these beliefs impact you:
What do you think about your co-workers?
What do you think about family members?
What do you think about yourself?
Now let's make some personal applications.

If you could shift just one belief, which belief would that be?
What will help you accomplish that?
